Passion Projects

I have selected two relatively similar but all the same, unique and specific-to-me projects. The first project is a wooden office desk and the second project is a wooden bookshelf. The reasons for choosing these projects are not solely for each items' practical use, nor for my creative and desired investment into their manifestation, but majorly for each piece of wood’s origin. Each project contains one hundred percent repurposed and recycled materials. Whether you look at the bookshelf or the office desk, each piece of wood came from discarded scraps from local house or building renovations and construction. While each screw, bolt, or nut came from decommissioned household appliances or broken down furniture or fading and forgotten basement equipment. The designs of each item were amalgamations of already present pieces of furniture, designs of memories, and adaptiveness to the quantity of wood and screws available.

I believe these projects speak to my abilities as an adaptive, creative, eclectic, and preserving engineer, worker, and person. The innate tenacity to overcome obstacles and ever growing limiting resources to achieve applicable means is how I most see my skills and adaptiveness in creating these pieces of work connecting and transferring to my abilities as an aspiring engineer and person. Their transferability are interconnected realities where one aspect of me being an engineer is in relation with my personhood and humanity. In a world with never ending and growing threats of scarcity of every kind, climate change devastation, and political and economic wars devastating the most vulnerable time and time again, all new and aspiring engineers will have to adapt and think, not only outside of it but, beyond the outside of the box. There must be a willingness to go-back to the essentials of community and “development”, where “development" does not get ahead of us or our ability to care for the Earth’s gifts or so called resources and all our relations on this Earth. This is  how I see and feel my projects and their required commitment and manifestation play a most significant role in my ever changing and adaptive growth as a person and as an aspiring engineer.
